IN THE ROOM #5 – Alignment Beats Agreement

Agreement feels good.

Alignment performs better.

In meetings, I often see teams reach agreement quickly.
Nods.
“Yes, that works.”
“Sounds good.”

That’s emotional comfort.

But alignment is operational.

Alignment answers:

  • What does “done” actually mean?

  • Who owns the outcome?

  • How will we measure success?

  • What happens if it slips?

Without clarity, people assume.

Assumptions create rework.

Psychological safety matters here.

If people don’t feel safe asking,
“Can we clarify what success looks like?”
misalignment survives.

Ownership only becomes real when expectations are explicit.

So here’s a simple question:

What does “done” mean in your team?

If three people answer differently, you have agreement. Not alignment.
