Advice and accountability

“I get lots of advice but not how to apply it” —student

It’s easy, and cheap, to buy a book about something you wanna get better at, or take a class about it, but we don’t often get shown how to apply it in real life. There’s a gap between theory and practice.

”Success is a process, not an event.” —MJ DeMarco, The Millionaire Fastlane.

It happens all the time! The misconception that success is a one-off event, like a magic pill, and will make lasting change. People get an exercise program but don’t have the discipline or the understanding to see it through themselves so they get a personal trainer–for at least a few sessions. They’re employing someone to hold them accountable and guide them. In the same way, a student seeks out a tutor to help them understand how to solve the problems that they couldn’t understand in class, or didn’t have the courage to ask for help in front of everyone else— for fear of looking ‘stupid’.

One on one interaction is required.

When I run goal-setting workshops, our students actually set the goals during the workshop and are then held accountable with their progress. If they don’t know what to do next—they just ask.

A great way to learn and embed the new knowledge is to seek out an accountability partner, or a study group, a book club, a meetup group, a mentor or coach and a way to practice what you’re learning.

Warning! Your little voice is going to try and take you out before you even start! So many people are afraid to leave the shores to discover new land for fear of failure or looking stupid. Don’t let this be you!

“Version one is better than version none!”

Just get started.

Ask more questions.

Find a mentor.

Become accountable!

Dan.

Ps. In case you’re thinking “soooo, how do I get started?” book a free session with me and I’ll point you in the right direction.
