Case Study #7 – Defence Engineering
Building leadership capability in technical environments.
Leadership development for engineers and technical leaders.
At a Glance
Industry: Defence & Engineering
Audience: Engineers, technical specialists and emerging leaders
Focus: Leadership capability, communication and people leadership
Format: Leadership development workshops and coaching
Outcome: Greater confidence, self-awareness and leadership effectiveness
Client Context
Defence and engineering organisations depend on highly capable technical professionals. But technical expertise and leadership capability are not the same thing. As engineers and specialists take on greater responsibility, they are increasingly expected to influence others, lead teams, communicate clearly and navigate difficult conversations — often without having received much formal development in those skills.
Challenge
The transition from technical specialist to leader creates a different set of demands.
Participants needed to become better equipped to:
lead people rather than simply solve technical problems
communicate with different personalities and working styles
influence colleagues and senior stakeholders
navigate difficult conversations
delegate rather than becoming the answer to every problem
maintain technical credibility while developing leadership confidence
The objective wasn't to turn engineers into generic managers. It was to help them become better leaders without losing the technical strengths that made them valuable in the first place.

Approach
Dan Kuss designed and facilitated leadership development experiences specifically for technical environments.
The work combined:
CliftonStrengths-based self-awareness
practical leadership tools
communication and influencing skills
delegation and accountability
difficult-conversation practice
facilitated discussion around real workplace challenges
individual coaching where deeper development was required
Rather than teaching leadership as theory, participants applied the tools to situations they were already facing in their roles.
Results
The programs helped participants develop a stronger understanding of how they lead, communicate and influence others.
Participants became better equipped to:
adapt their communication to different people
recognise when their natural strengths were helping or hindering them
step into leadership conversations with greater confidence
create clearer expectations and accountability
move from being the technical problem-solver to enabling others to perform
The result is stronger leadership capability inside environments where technical performance, collaboration and judgement all matter.
