Client Context
Early-career professionals entering complex organisations quickly discover that work rarely arrives with perfect information and a clearly defined answer. Priorities change. Stakeholders disagree. Plans evolve. And sometimes the path forward simply isn't obvious. In defence environments, where work can be technically complex and highly interdependent, being able to perform effectively through uncertainty becomes an important professional capability.
Challenge
The challenge was not to somehow eliminate uncertainty.
It was to help participants become more capable inside it.
That meant learning how to:
recognise their natural response when certainty disappears
understand how their strengths influence their behaviour under pressure
avoid becoming stuck waiting for perfect information
identify what they can control and influence
seek the right information without endlessly analysing
make progress when the path forward remains incomplete
Approach
Dan developed the Strengths in Uncertainty workshop to combine CliftonStrengths with practical strategies for navigating ambiguity and change.
Participants explored:
how their individual strengths respond under pressure
the productive and unproductive expression of those strengths
what uncertainty does to decision-making and behaviour
how different colleagues may respond very differently to the same situation
practical ways to create clarity when clarity doesn't initially exist
how to move from uncertainty toward constructive action
The workshop made uncertainty something participants could examine and work with rather than simply endure.
Results
Participants left with a clearer understanding of their own patterns and practical tools they could apply when circumstances became unclear.
Rather than prescribing one "correct" response to uncertainty, the program helped individuals identify how their own strengths could become resources for navigating it.
That created a practical shift:
from waiting for certainty
to building capability in uncertainty.

Leading people through uncertainty?
If your people are operating in complexity, change or ambiguity, the objective shouldn't simply be greater resilience. It should be greater capability.
