The new #1 reason why people are not achieving their goals. It’s not what you think – Mountain Lesson No. 46

Have you been achieving your goals lately?

Are you struggling to get enough sleep?

How much time do you spend on your device(s)?

How much time do you spend on Netflix, etc.?

The most common reasons why we don’t achieve our goals used to be things like having the wrong goals, not writing them down, wrong environment or lack of self-belief. Now, I reckon it’s DISTRACTION.

Take a look around. There’s so much to be distracted by. I get distracted, too. Having to coach international students to be more effective required me to learn how to focus and step up my game, too. I learnt a lot about the distractions and motivations of students and to be honest, I reckon we all suffer the same distractions. It’s universal. A sense of belonging, boredom, missing friends and family, income security, self-worth and deservedness, fear of missing out, to name a few. The most success students that I was lucky enough to work with, and learn a lot from, had mastered the art of managing distractions.

Here’s 11 things to consider:

  1. Carve out some device-free time into your day

  2. Turn off device notifications

  3. Hide your apps inside folders on your device

  4. Put your phone in flight mode when you have focused work or play to do

  5. Don’t keep your devices in your bedroom

  6. Write a list of goals to achieve and break the goals into tasks

  7. Now write a list of all the things that get in the way

  8. Get clear on why those goals are important to you

  9. Create a vision board of those goals and keep it somewhere visible

  10. Create a wallpaper of your vision board on your devices to remind you or what’s important

  11. Find out your Gallup Strengths and use them to be more effective

What’s a vision board?

It’s a collage of images and quotes that represent your dreams and goals. The real power in vision boards is the forced clarity. To chose a picture of a holiday, for example, you first need to choose a destination. When we are not clear on our goals and WHY they are important to us, it’s too easy to give up when the going gets tough. We allow ourselves to get distracted with something that offers instant gratification (insert the sound of a new message).

What are Gallup Strengths?

The Gallup CliftonStrengths assessment identifies a person's unique sequence of 34 themes of talent and shows people how to succeed by developing them into strengths. People who know and use their CliftonStrengths are:

  • 6 times more likely to be engaged at work

  • 8% more productive in their role

  • 3 times more likely to have an excellent quality of life and

  • 6 times more likely to do what they do best every day.

If you’re like me, and get distracted easily, monkey brain going bonkers, then it helps to learn what you’re naturally talented at and use that to create more focus and less distraction. DM me to find out more.

Be amazing!
